Welcome to LEOT
A UK-based charity working to help disadvantaged young people in Laos fulfil their potential.
- Laos is a small landlocked country bordered by Thailand , Vietnam , Cambodia , Burma and China .
- There is very little industry, 80% of the population work on the land, life expectancy rates are low and illiteracy high. Educational opportunities are often very limited and many young people only have 3 years education, from age 8 to 11 .
- Laos ranks among the United Nations 50 Least Developed Countries.
- A large part of the country is still littered with unexploded ordinance from the Vietnam War.
LEOT
- Supports four students currently.
- Hopes to expand this number to twelve by December 2008.
- Aims to select students from all ethnic backgrounds and maintain an equal male to female balance.
- Provides assistance by paying for tuition fees, study materials and subsistence grants to those students studying away from home.
- Monitors academic progress.
Maintains role of guardian rather than distant sponsor.
