Lao Educational Opportunities Trust
We established LEOT in 2006 as, following trips to Laos and meeting the people and seeing the country, we felt that we should do something positive to help.
We started off with a couple of students, raised some money and soon added a couple more students to our fold. With the passing of time, our understanding of the cultural differences and the way things work in Laos has grown and we have matured as a charitable organization. From knowing nothing we now know a lot more and, with cautious expansion, we have slowly increased the number of students we are supporting.
Whilst we have concentrated our efforts on supporting students in Vientiane and Luang Prabang, we would obviously like to expand our coverage to the southern parts of Laos in the future.
LEOT is a UK registered charity and is therefore monitored by the Charity Commission.
Administration
The overall administration of the Charity is the responsibility of the Trustees and is based in the UK. There are currently three Trustees. The Homeland Director, who is based in Laos, is responsible for identifying prospective students, promoting LEOT within Laos and dealing with the support and welfare of our students.
Fund Raising and Expenditure
91% of our income is from donations and the associated Gift Aid, but other fund raising events (such as sponsored cycle rides) play an important part.
Our main expenditure, some 11% of our income, is spent in Laos on administration and monitoring of the students themselves. The rest of the expenditure, some 84%, is to cover the current (and also the future) fees and expenses of the students. When we take on a student we have to ensure that we set enough funds aside to cover the fees for the total period of the course, which is why we do not spend all our income in the year. Incidental administration costs incurred in the UK are generally borne personally by the Trustees (as are their travel costs to, and expenses incurred in, Laos).
