His mother died when he was very young and his father moved away to become a day labourer in Thailand to earn enough money to pay for Thong and his 3 siblings. When he was 10, an uncle encouraged him to join the local temple as a “temple boy”. When he was old enough Thong became a novice, but at a poor and remote temple where educational opportunities were limited. A visiting Monk recognised Thong as a novice of exceptional ability, and encouraged him to move to Luang Prabang where opportunities were better and Thong started to learn English. At the age of 20 Thong was ordained and became Monk Thong, effectively in charge of his temple and 16 novices. He continued to study English at High School and was awarded a diploma. He was eager to study at a higher level and qualify as a lay teacher, but with no resources nor family support this was impossible. Thong is now in his final year at a Business college, having been supported by LEOT since 2006.
