Houmpheng Phetpanya

Background Submission

Pheng is from remote village in northern Laos, born into a farming family. He completed the 3 years mandatory schooling in his village and in his teens he enrolled as a Novice Monk to give himself  further educational opportunities which he would not have had as a lay person. He moved to Vientiane initially and then on to a temple in Luang Prabang where at aged 20 he became an ordained monk. However, his educational ambitions outstripped the facilities available within the temple and he sought to enrol at a High School to learn English. As a monk he had no money and neither the temple nor his family were able to pay his fees. With the support of LEOT he enrolled for a Diploma course which he completed in 2009. He has now left the temple and with LEOT support has enrolled on a Civil Engineering course at Souphanavong University in Luang Prabang. He also works part time at the airport.
