A students talks about the LEOT Scholarship programme

LEOT School student scholarship for study in Laos

Hello everyone! My name is Sinkham Kongvilai. I am Khmu. I am 20 years old.

There are 7 people in my family. I am the fourth of five siblings. My parents are both farmers. I was born and grew up in Ban Namkha, a small mountain village in the countryside, 150 kilometers from Luang Prabang Town. I didn’t have any idea it could be possible for me to finish high school because the school was far from my village and I had to ride a bicycle 12 kilometers everyday to go to school and back home. My parents didn’t have enough money to support me and all my siblings to go to school because they left my grandparents home and built a small hut for us. It was very hard for my parents to support children and build a place for us at the same time. After I finished high School I wanted to study in Vientiane because it had a higher level of education and I wanted to see and learn new things in the big city.

I’m very lucky to have had the LEOT School help me with a scholarship to pay for my tuition at University. Now, I’m studying at the National University of Laos, Faculty of Forestry and my major is Forest Economics and Wood Technology. This is my second year. I love forests and the green environment.

My studying is going well. My score for my first year was 3.18 points (cumulative GPA) and for the first semester of my 2nd year, I got 3.07 points, I like Vientiane but not as much as Luang Prabang. I’m living in a small dormitory with my youngest sister and this is her last year at high school.

My life in Vientiane is going well and I have a part time job there. I have also learned about real estate and I’m a freelance broker now. I love this part time job because I love selling and being of service to people and I also plan to be a gardener to work with people who love beautiful yards. I think this kind of job could provide work for me in the future and could be another part time job.

Thank you so much LEOT for supporting me and helping me achieve my dream. I appreciate your help very much.

Thank you
